In de zomer hebben de mannetjes een roodbruine vacht met witte vlekken, terwijl de vacht van de vrouwtjes en jonge dieren bruiner is. In de winter verandert de vacht van het hert in een donkerdere bruintint.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Edelherten komen veel voor in veel landen in Europa en Azi\u00eb en geven de voorkeur aan open landschappen zoals bossen, weilanden en bergachtige streken. De dieren zijn kuddedieren en leven in roedels van maximaal 20 dieren, die geleid worden door een dominante man, de zogenaamde tophond.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In veel Europese landen heeft het edelhert een grote culturele betekenis en wordt het vaak genoemd in sprookjes en legendes. Zelfs vandaag de dag vereren veel mensen het nog steeds als een majestueus dier. Er zijn echter ook conflicten met de landbouw en het verkeer, omdat herten vaak velden en wegen oversteken, wat schade en ongelukken kan veroorzaken.
